Mesa

Mesa

I designed these three tables for my senior design project. They are the very first tables that I plan on producing for my business in the future. They are supposed to go as a set; two nesting coffee tables with one end table.

Inspiration

The piece that inspired my the most was the Solapa tables by Stua.

The Mood

The form language that I used was a mixture of minimalism and brutalism. The form was minimalistic while the material that I used (concrete) was brutalist.

Sketches / Prototypes

Test swatches for the table top surface. 3x3in swatches

Process

Created a wooden negative for the primary mold

Applied urethane rubber to create the primary mold

Getting ready for master mold

Separating the molds

Coating mold to reduce air bubbles

Demolding

Final top with walnut legs (unfinished)

Completed table

Finished pouring the master mold

Wooden negative and the primary mold

Finished the initial pour

Water grinding to achieve a smooth surface

Adding a tung oil finish

Finished tables together

Ecological Countermeasure

Concrete contributes to 8% of all carbon dixoide produced by humans. To combat this I plan on using recycled plastic as aggregate. This does not directly solve the carbon dioxide problem, but it addresses another, more devastating environmental crisis, plastics.

This is a 3x3in. swatch that has recycled plastic shavings. They act as a binder, just like fiberglass.
